This guide intends to provide access and instruction in the use of a variety of electronic resources and service to support the scholarship and curricular activities of FIU Law students.

Literature & User Guides

The section on Literature & User Guides consist in short lessons with instructions, illustrations and examples that can be downloaded and printed. Lessons cover topics such as using terms and connectors, searching for a specific source, browsing or searching a table of content (TOC), browsing topics, printing, emailing, downloading or saving documents; how to write a brief or memo; transactional and litigation research; how to find more supporting arguments with Shepards; and for the advanced law student developing transactional legal skills with Lexis Practice Advisor.

Resources for Faculty

Lexis Nexis created a series of tools to assist faculty and students in mastering legal research and writing skills. These tools can be found under Teaching Tools, and include: (a) User Guides; (b) Lesson Plans; (c) Instructional Videos; and (d) Interactive Tutorials, among other.

Instructional Videos

Instructional Videos that help explain how to search and use Lexis can be found on YouTube at LexisNexis Law School’s Channel https://www.youtube.com/user/LexisNexisLawSchools/. Some of the videos include researching brief assignments and open memos; tips on class preparation; case citation; Shepardizing Headnotes; researching secondary sources, and using term and connectors.

Interactive Tutorials prepared on topics such as researching a career in law; finding more authority with Lexis; saving and organizing your research; Shepardizing; starting your research; and using the UCC Reporter – Digests.
